February in numbers: online
Following some depressing reports in last month’s Above the Fold for the online readership of the UK national newspapers, the new year has so-far welcomed some fresher and brighter figures. News websites battled through the January blues and finished the month with positive increases in daily average unique visitors across the board. It was particularly promising to see that the Independent, after an intense decline the previous month (-21.8 per cent), bounced back with a 12.6 per cent increase in daily browsers.
The real highlight of the January figures comes in the form of the Evening Standard’s very impressive 27.4 per cent increase of average visitors. The January boost for the publication could be a consequence of its new online feature: ‘Go London’. The microsite launched in January as an online guide to restaurants, bars, attractions and culture in London. Tables and tickets can be booked directly from the site which is updated daily. Watch out Time Out, there’s a new kid on the block!
