Above the Fold: online in numbers

The latest online ABCs show the majority of the most popular online news platforms to have performed well in October, however Metro lost 351,000 average daily browsers after a 14.8 per cent decrease in traffic.

The Independent performed particularly well, experiencing a 7 per cent boost, taking its total traffic to almost 6.3 million, while the Sun was up 6.2 per cent to more than 5.5 million, and the London Evening Standard up 7.7 per cent to 796,900.

Mail Online edged closer to the 15 million mark, thanks to a 3.8 per cent increase in web traffic. Its website currently brings in more than 14.7 million browsers a day.

The Guardian is changing the way it reports online data and is not currently included in the online ABC results. However, it recently announced it has succeeded in increasing its revenue from readers to a point where it now outweighs income from advertising, growing its paying membership base from 75,000 to 300,000 members in the past year.

This is a significant achievement, making it less dependent on a highly-challenging advertising market for publishers.
